Reported in The Straits Times on 6 October 2026
A 38-year-old man, represented by Mr Kevin Liew of Gloria James-Civetta & Co, was sentenced to seven weeks’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to engaging the sexual services of a 16-year-old girl who had told him she was 21.
The man contacted the teenager after seeing a message advertising sexual services on Telegram and agreed to pay her $150. When they met, he asked her age and she told him she was 21. However, he did not take further steps to verify her age.
The accused later pleaded guilty to one count of engaging the sexual services of a person below 18.
Sentence
The Prosecution sought a sentence of 8 to 9 weeks’ imprisonment, while Mr Kevin Liew sought a lower sentence of 4 to 6 weeks’ imprisonment on behalf of the accused.
In mitigation, Mr Liew highlighted that his client had asked the girl her age and was told that she was 21, and that there had been no penetrative sexual conduct.
The Court ultimately sentenced the accused to 7 weeks’ imprisonment, below the sentence sought by the Prosecution.
