Man Sentenced to Five Months’ Jail for Cheating Dental Clinics of Nearly $5,000

Reported in The Straits Times on Jun 12, 2024

A 36-year-old male was sentenced to five months in jail on June 12 for cheating six dental clinics out of over $4,780 in unpaid procedures, including X-rays and root canal treatments. On each visit, Tanaka excused himself to use a restroom located outside the clinic and then left without paying.

His lawyer, Noelle Teoh from Gloria James-Civetta & Co, argued that his actions lacked any sophisticated planning, as each clinic could have easily refused his request to leave temporarily. Ms Teoh also emphasized that her client had fully reimbursed the clinics, totalling $7,004.38, including payments for additional charges taken into consideration.

While acknowledging the lack of sophistication, Principal District Judge Jill Tan noted that his actions were premeditated. Deputy Public Prosecutor Cheronne Lim had sought a sentence of five to seven months, emphasizing the semi-surgical nature of the treatments Tanaka received.

    SENTENCE
The court sentenced Tanaka to five months in jail, underscoring the seriousness of his repeated offences despite his efforts to make restitution.
